TASTING
Petronilo Martinez’s harvest is one of the best Guatemala harvests we have tasted so far. Incredibly complex, this coffee offers lots of rich, chocolatey aromas that blend smoothly with its surprising acidity reminiscent of orange zest. The sip ends with a delicate presence of a sweet red fruit - we think of a cherry or a plum. You’re left dreaming of chocolate-covered cherries!
ORIGIN
Petronilo Martinez is a second generation coffee producer. His father, Gumercindo Martir Martinez, established his farm in 1958 and was one of the first to produce coffee in the Hoja Blanca village. After inheriting the land, Petronilo got deeply engaged in his community and worked to grow market access for smallholder farmers in the valley. He quickly acquired more hectares of land for his own estate as well.
Petronilo’s son, Petronilo Jesus Martinez, is a forestry engineer who helps his father manage the coffee farms. His unique expertise has no doubt enhanced their community’s cup quality through the years.
Petronilo Senior’s son-in-law, Aurelio Villatoro, is an award-winning coffee producer, renowned for producing some of the best harvests in Guatemala. This particular harvest went through a 36-hour wet fermentation process, after which the beans were left to dry on raised beds for 14 days.
DRINKING
This is a very versatile coffee, one that will be just as enjoyable as an espresso or filter coffee. For a more balanced experience, a filter brew will be privileged; to appreciate the complexity and acidity of the coffee in a more pronounced way, try it in espresso!
